6 Easy Steps for Moving into Your Senior Life

6 Easy Steps for Moving into Your Senior Life

Everyone knows that moving is a stressful time, emotions are running high and the physical demands take a lot out of you. This can be especially hard if you’re a senior and this is your first move in a long time. Just the thought of putting a house up for sale and going through years of keepsakes can make you want to stay where you are.

Take a deep breath, it’ll all work out in the end. But until then, here are some tips to help you through the move and into your new home.

Focus on the Positive

This is a good thing that is happening to you. You are trading in the responsibilities of a large house for something a little more manageable. And while Sun City doesn’t provide housekeeping or other services, there are some helpful numbers in the community’s magazine.

Pack with Confidence

Give yourself enough time to downsize, pack, and move. Get yourself a notebook to keep to a schedule, make lists of what needs to be done, and write memories from the items you are debating on keeping.

Be Realistic and Start Small

You’ve collected a lot of memories and belongings over the years, and it’s not realistic to try to sort it all at once. Set aside 20 minutes a day to go through a pile or room of your house. Once you start you might find it hard to stop.

Get your important things together

Before you pack too much, put together a folder with all of your important papers. This includes your will, birth certificate, medical records, passports, power of attorney, military records, and diplomas. While you are doing this call your doctors and pharmacies to transfer medications and prescriptions if needed.

Measure out your space

Moving into a smaller house means that some of your old furniture might not fit. Make sure you measure out the new rooms and consult the floor plan before packing up. Then make plans to donate or sell anything that you aren’t taking with you.

Rely on Your Friends and Family

This process doesn’t have to be done alone, moving is hard for everyone. Call up your friends and relatives so they can help you. Your family can help by taking anything that is theirs or things that you want to give away. And having people around makes the work go faster and more fun.

Moving into a new home is a big and exciting change, but that means it can also be stressful and chaotic. If you follow these tips your transition will be smooth and you will be relaxing in your new home in no time.
