How to Maintain Healthy Finances When Relocating

How to Maintain Healthy Finances When RelocatingIf you're planning a move or relocation you know it can be spending. There is moving costs, gas, and then all the time it takes… Which if time is money, that is a huge expense. While we don't want to drain on our bank accounts, we do want to find a way to wisely manage your money and finances when moving. We help a lot of folks moving to and from Sun City Texas, most of which have pretty established credit and finances. Those folks certainly don't want to disrupt their healthy finances too much so here are some tips about maintaining healthy finances when relocating.

Plan ahead

Planning makes all the difference in the world and then you're not flying by the seat of your pants. Unless you are moving abruptly or you didn't realize you had to relocate, plan as far in advance as possible. Start making a notebook or checklist of things that you'll need to complete and a timeline to give yourself some breathing room in between.

Give yourself a goal as to when you want to be in your new home and then prioritize tasks around it. Make a list of when you need to shut off utilities and energy costs and then restart them at the new location. Try to time things perfectly so that you're not overpaying for utilities. The last thing you want is to be responsible for bills at two locations. Ask about any cancellation fees or setup costs and if they can be waived. The worst they can say is no.

Moving can be costly so price out moving companies ahead of time and check out their ratings and reviews. The cheapest is usually not the best. You want them to take care of your belongings so get ratings and reviews before finalizing with a moving company and ask if there are any discounts if you plan ahead.

What are you going to do yourself?

How much of the move are you planning to do yourself? This can save you a lot of money by packing up slowly, labeling everything, and taking the proper time off work to handle the logistics yourself. Some things we simply cannot do ourselves so it's okay to plan ahead and prepare, just make sure it fits within your budget.

Calculate as much of the cost as possible.

Shopping around and being flexible on the dates of relocation can help save moving costs and keep you on budget. Remember, you may have title and insurance fees, Real Estate Commission's if you're buying or selling, packing materials and gas costs depending on how far you're going. To save on packing materials, use what you already have such as blankets and linens for wrapping dishes and valuables.

Pad the budget.

Whatever you think this is going to cost add a little bit to it. If you don't use it, you'll have a little extra once you relocate but at least you'll be prepared for those unexpected costs that pop up.
