Home owners who fancy gardening will find many like-minded souls in the Sun City Texas community.  Yards are landscaped according to owner preferences. Driving about our community you’ll see yards as varied as the people who move here.  Lushly tropical to desert motif. Sun City Texas has a long time reputation for being well planted and well maintained.  Growing wild is OK, just not going crazy, as all landscape plans must be approved.

With encouragement from the community association, more home owners are reducing grass and adding eye pleasing meandering borders and “streams” of rock in landscaping. Native Texas plants are favored because they look good and reduce maintenance and water use.  The Rugg household just underwent such a transformation and we are eager to post some photos in part two.  You’re also going to notice contracted landscapers who keep the common areas trimmed, mowed, planted and maintained, plus independent yard crews tending to many residential yards. 

Taking advantage of the Sun City Garden Club member's knowledge is an ideal way to make new friends and get your questions about gardening answered.  Non-members always welcome. Each Spring the Garden Club hosts a popular tour of resident yards. We always enjoy the annual event, and make good use of cell phone cameras, for ideas and inspiration. A new heat loving beauty we’re seeing more often is Pride of Barbados, shown above.  Crepe Myrtle is another showy easy keeper, below.

The second alternative for gardeners is the Horticultural Club, where raised beds brim with produce and flowers, and two annual plant sales.  Vegetable gardening and the Horticultural Garden are another blog, coming soon.
